Abstract

The fluid thermo laboratory at the El Vecino de la Venta-La Universidad Politécnica de Siana campus in Cuenca (UPS), Ecuador, has a shell and tube heat exchanger. This experimental equipment is very important from the didactic point of view for subjects such as Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer (subjects that are part of the curriculum of the Mechanical Engineering Degree Program), as well as for carrying out application projects at the institutional level. This paper presents the simulation results of the heat transfer processes taking place in the heat exchanger, and demonstrates the feasibility of "replacing" the physical equipment by computer simulation. In addition, the benefits that this possible replacement has for the institution and teaching are shown.
