Abstract

The dogmatic constitution Lumen Gentium, one of the most important documents of the Second Vatican Council, establishes the ecclesiological images that were treated in the episcopal conferences of Medellín and Puebla, thus giving a new course for the life of the Church in Latin America. In chapter two (“People of God”) fundamental aspects of this new ecclesiology are raised, such as the presence of an unknown aggiornamento and a return to the sources is proposed, taking up the ecclesiological images of the different stages of the Church that contributed to the development of the conciliar document in question. As Quishpe and Ruiz (2019) point out:The post-apostolic era reveals a series of images of the Church (Body, Wife, Temple, City of God, People) that, despite not being a structured ecclesiology, its images served to improve the sense of life of the Christian community ; The reflection of the Fathers configured this community in a better way, determining an ecclesial hierarchical structure reflected in the images themselves (Body of Christ, People of God, Mother Church), which despite being questioned in the Middle Ages due to their lack of coherence, were determinants in the Council of Trent and in the subsequent one, realized in the dogmatic constitution Lumen Gentium thatshows the following images: the Church is: People, Body of Christ, Communion, Sacrament, Salvation, Mystery, Mother. (pp. 23-24)This article seeks to determine that the mentioned ecclesiological images are present in the episcopal conferences of Medellín and Puebla to verify their continuity or discontinuity in the ecclesial magisterium of Saint John Paul II. For this reason, it starts with a historical reflection from the First Rio Conference (1955), going through the different meetings of the bishops and continues with the analysis of the conciliar documents, concluding with the magisterial reflection of Saint John Paul II.
