Abstract

The simplicity, high efficiency and robustness of PID controllers make them a widely accepted alternative in the industry around the world. This paper presents the development of two Dahlin-type Proportional Integral and Derivative (PID) controllers, the first one based on the development of a traditional controller and the second one optimized by employing the metaheuristic ABC algorithm for the speed control of a permanent magnet DC motor in a plant control trainer (CTP). The programming is developed with Matlab software, using the Simulink tool together with the drivers and programmers of the Waijung library, and the ARM STM32F4-Discovery platform of 32-bit ARM-Cortex architecture is in charge of the management of the control process. The performance comparison is carried out using the performance index of the Integral of Absolute Error multiplied in time (ITAE), statistically analyzed by IBM’s Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), where the performance of each controller is evaluated. The results are interesting from the point of view of automatic control.
