Study of the Design and Deployment of Next-Generation Optical Networks to Provide Ultra-Broadband Services

Project Details

Description

This research project, led by the GIETEC group at the Universidad Politécnica Salesiana (UPS), focuses on the study and deployment of next-generation optical networks to meet the growing demand for ultra-wideband services. Faced with the need for more efficient and scalable infrastructures, the team investigates the integration of technologies such as WDM-PON, TWDM, SDN, and NFV, seeking to reduce hardware complexity through advanced signal processing techniques. The methodological approach combines a review of the state-of-the-art with computational simulation (using tools like OptSim, MATLAB, and Python) and experimental laboratory implementation. The project addresses critical challenges such as latency, spectral efficiency, and security in high-speed transport networks, proposing low-cost alternatives that allow for seamless integration with 5G networks and future 6G architectures. As a result, the project strengthens institutional research capacity, contributes to the academic training of postgraduate and undergraduate students, and generates indexed scientific publications. Furthermore, the research provides technical knowledge on optimal network configurations, positively impacting digital connectivity and the development of the digital economy in the context of sustainable cities and communities.

Goal:
To study the design and deployment of next-generation optical networks to provide ultra-wideband services through low-complexity solutions.
