Abstract

This book entitled Transhumanism and parallel realities. Interpellations from Philosophy and Theology is the result of an interdisciplinary analysis of recognized authors and researchers in the field of Philosophy and Theology from the Salesian Polytechnic University of Ecuador and the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana of Colombia. The book establishes a dialogue between philosophy, theology and religion with technoscience. It is a set of six chapters that carry out an interdisciplinary dialogue but broken down from specific topics. It is a well analyzed work, clear, coherent and with argumentative unity that responds to the situations of our times. The most visible thread throughout the development of the book has to do with the tensions generated for humanism by the stakes of current technoscience. Today, there are several alerts awakened by technoscience: transhumanism, posthumanism, cyborg humanism and genetic manipulation. The book resorts to a method very typical of philosophers, mayeutics, where the authors submit to debate the possibilities offered by the advance of technoscience, but also reveals the imminent risks that these uncontrolled modifications could represent for the human being. It is a current, interesting and well presented subject. A well-articulated collective exercise. Faced with a society increasingly permeated, woven and influenced by technological rationality, it demands a responsible debate between theology, philosophy, the possibilities of transhumanism and everything that shapes it, at the pace of the accelerated advances of technoscience and the multiple possibilities it offers to explore from anthropology, axiology, ethics, philosophy of science and also axiology. The approaches expressed in this book make clear the urgent need to reflect on transhumanism and the promises offered by technological development in search of an ethical and axiological foundation to guide the current technoscientific development. Finally, this work becomes a pertinent treatise, which forces us to reflect on the way in which the idea of the human being has been evolving from the effects of an exaggerated and uncontrolled application of techno-scientific advances on himself. This is fertile ground for both philosophy and theology: warning about the possible effects of the use of new technologies on the development of human abilities is not simply a reactionary attitude towards the evolution of the sciences. A reflection such as the one presented in this text allows us to learn about arguments that favor dialogue between knowledge and awareness of the necessary responsibility we have towards the planet and our own species.
