Abstract
The southeastern Amazon of Ecuador has a long history that is associated with different processes and periods of human occupation of space and control of the territory. The archaeological and historical analysis of the processes of occupation of the southeastern Ecuadorian Amazon gave rise to a generic classification of these societies as "simple tropical cultures" (Steward, 1948). Authors such as Meggers (1971) and Roosevelt (1980) have based their interpretations on ecological adaptation, and have argued that the inter-riverine societies of the Amazon would not have reached complexity or greater social development due to the type of environment.
