Abstract

Environmental Biotechnology employs the use of organisms for the prevention, monitoring and remediation of ecosystems, at the same time allowing the generation of bioproducts and clean energy. The book contains three chapters, the first establishes the foundations of Environmental Biotechnology and its applications in terrestrial, aquatic and aerial environments; In addition, applied tools such as biosensors in environmental monitoring, phytoremediation in various Latin American contexts and the strengthening of sustainable agriculture are presented. The second chapter describes the importance of a bibliometric study and the approach for the various investigations, a user manual is detailed, which allows its replicability in other contexts. In addition to presenting a case study applied to the central theme of this book, which systematizes the most studied topics, trends, magazines and countries with the greatest contributions. In the third chapter several laboratory practices and a section of questions are presented, which can be used in other educational practices or autonomously. In conclusion, the chapters are complementary to each other, facilitating the understanding and interest of the reader. The area of greatest relevance corresponds to bioremediation in soils contaminated by hydrocarbons and heavy metals, the most frequent groups in the review were fungi, cyanobacteria and genetically modified organisms. Finally, there is an opportunity for the use and potential combination of techniques based on metagenomics, environmental DNA, and artificial intelligence for the development of new trends in Environmental Biotechnology.
