Abstract
Surface roughness of heat treated and CNC turningmachined AISI 4140 steel has been analyzed by designof experiments. An orthogonal array matrix of 16experiments was obtained, considering as factorstemperature and heating time for quenching, besidesfeed and depth of cut, each one with two levels. Thepreparation of the material for the experiments wasaccording ASME B46.1 standard. To take the surfaceroughness measurement, a Mitutoyo SJ210 roughnessmeter was utilized and following the indicatedprocedure in ISO 1302:2002 standard. The best factorsand levels combination was in the experiment 5,obtaining a surface roughness of 0.446 μm. The resultsindicated that the most significant factor in surfaceroughness was the depth of the cut, obtaining a p valueof 0.008. Therefore, the best values for the machiningof heat-treated AISI 4140 steel were 800 °C and 30minutes for quenching, meanwhile for feed and depthof cut were 0.1 mm·rev-1 and 0.2 mm, respectively.
