Organization profile

The Research Group on Communication and Interculturality (GICOI) aims to carry out research with an interdisciplinary character on the intercultural processes of Ecuador, including audiovisual and hypermedia production as valid proposals for these purposes.

During the development of history, there have been challenges in the coexistence of different ethnic groups and peoples. These problems have generated systematic and institutionalized exclusions based on languages such as racism, the pejorative vision of each ethnic group, etc. Recognition of the other, of the different peoples or nationalities living together in a particular territory, makes it possible to consolidate democratic and liberal values that favour the recognition and integration of diverse customs and knowledge in the pursuit of the construction of an identity. The problem of coexistence is a communicative problem, given precisely the limits of what is possible to communicate and what is not, communication being understood as a mediating process between one and the other. From communication it is impossible to approach intercultural processes without the theoretical conceptions of other related disciplines such as cultural studies, philosophy, sociology, etc.
