Resumen
Academic postponement of gratification is the ability to resist the temptation to satisfy impulses immediately for the sake of pursuing academic rewards that are more distant in time but also more valuable. This paper evaluates the psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the Academic Delay of Gratification Scale (ADOGS) in the university context of Ecuador. The data correspond to a sample (N = 571) of students from public and private universities in Quito, Ecuador. The validation strategy consisted of evaluating the aspects of internal structure, reliability and external-nomological validity. The results of the exploratory (eigenvalue = 3,575; explained variance = 37,08%) and confirmatory (χ2 = 39,677; gl = 20; p < 0,01; χ2/gl = 1,984; CFI = 0,969; IFI = 0,970; GFI = 0,965; TLI = 0,957; RMSEA = 0,059; SRMR = 0,041) factor analysis support the validity of a one-dimensional structure for the construct. The reliability levels of the instrument are satisfactory (α = 0,826; ω = 0,877). Likewise, evidence of external validity is provided in nomological terms, finding significant and positive correlations between the measurements provided by the ADOGS and the self-control variable. Based on the findings presented, it is possible to conclude that, considering a reduced version (8 items) and the proposed measurement model, the ADOGS provides useful, valid and reliable measurements to assess the ability to postpone immediate gratification and prioritize academic activities in university students.
