Resumen

The objective of the study was to determine the relationship between transformational and transactional leadership of middle-level managers of sugarcane agroindustrial companies in the coastal zone of the province of Cañar in Ecuador, with the outcome variables: central self-evaluations, satisfaction, extra effort and effectiveness, as perceived by the followers. The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) for leadership and outcome variables satisfaction, extra effort and effectiveness and the Core Self-Evaluations Scale (CSES) for the central self-evaluations variable were applied. The sample was composed of managers and followers, whose statistical analysis was based on the use of structural equations to determine the relationships between the different variables. The findings show that transformational leadership has a significant direct relationship with the outcome variables with the highest degree of impact on the variables satisfaction, extra effort and effectiveness. It is concluded that the transformational quality of leadership is increasingly important for agribusiness firms which face increasing productivity pressures given the decreases in crop yields due to climate change.
