Resumen
The present study examines the distribution of ultraviolet (UV) radiation monitoring stations in South American countries during the months of December to February. Data were collected from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela, Bolivia, and Paraguay, covering a total of 89 stations. The results reveal significant variability in the number of stations among countries, with Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru standing out with a higher number of stations (range: 9–11), while Uruguay, Venezuela, and Bolivia show a lower number (range: 6–9). This variability may be related to geographical, demographic, and funding factors. Possible implications for human health and the environment are discussed, highlighting the importance of UV radiation monitoring to understand its effects on health and the environment. The need for awareness and preventive measures, including the use of sunscreen and avoiding direct sun exposure during peak UV radiation hours, is emphasized. This study underscores the importance of an equitable distribution of UV radiation monitoring stations to ensure adequate surveillance and promote health and well-being in the South American region.
