Resumen
This paper examines the evolution and characteristics of Benefit and Collective Interest (BIC) companies in Ecuador during the 2020–2024 period, within a legal framework that promotes the triple bottom line: economic, social, and environmental impact. Based on official data from the Superintendency of Companies, Securities, and Insurance, the study applies a descriptive and quantitative methodology supported by statistical and visualization tools. The analysis explores the annual growth rate of BIC companies, their geographic distribution, and their economic activities, considering a total of 1,697 registered firms. Results reveal a rapid initial adoption in 2021, followed by a phase of progressive stabilization, with a strong concentration in the Sierra region, especially in Pichincha, and predominance in professional services, commerce, and construction. A comparative perspective with Colombia highlights similarities in the adoption patterns and underscores the importance of regulatory incentives to sustain long-term growth. The findings show that the BIC model represents a promising mechanism for promoting corporate responsibility and sustainability in Ecuador. However, its consolidation requires stronger policy frameworks, measurable impact indicators, and broader sectoral and territorial integration to ensure equitable and sustainable development.
