Workplace happiness during telework: A descriptive study from the digital economy in Ecuador

Abstract

The digital economy has transformed labor relations and corporate culture, establishing telework as a relevant modality in this context. The objective of this study was to analyze the levels of workplace happiness during telework in Ecuador, considering dimensions such as productivity, work-life balance, and stress levels. A quantitative study was conducted using a validated questionnaire with 35 items applied to a sample of 592 Ecuadorian workers with telework experience. Data were processed using Microsoft Excel, SPSS, and R Studio, represented through box plots, categorizing scores into levels and estimating confidence intervals using the bootstrap method. The results reported moderate to high levels of workplace happiness, with a population median ranging between 35.0 and 38.0 points. Sectors such as technology and education showed more favorable perceptions, while the city of Cuenca and remote service sectors displayed lower levels. Differences were observed in the analyzed dimensions according to educational level, work sector, and geographic location. It is concluded that telework in Ecuador offers moderately favorable conditions for workplace happiness. This highlights the need to develop public policies and organizational strategies tailored to enhance and promote workplace well-being.
