Abstract

Intercultural bilingual education in several countries has experienced, for several decades, its implementation at the basic, intermediate and higher levels. In Ecuador, almost three decades of Intercultural Bilingual Education (IBE) endorsed by public policy have not been enough to make it a reality. It is necessary to make a balance and an emergent reading of the current state of this political process in order to reflect on the direction that IBE should take to avoid the death of languages and the entire historical accumulation of cultures of the great Abya-yala heritage, condemned to a permanent acculturation that has ended up folklorizing and weakening the trunk of the tree of life of the original peoples of America. The research will answer two questions: To what extent have Ecuadorian public education policies of the last two decades contributed to the development of IBE by incorporating contents that deepen the wisdom of the cultures of the peoples and nationalities of Ecuador towards the revitalization of interculturality and plurinationality within the framework of their curricular plans? And the second aspect goes into the following reflection: What kind of resistances are emerging from the peoples and nationalities, facing homogenizing processes, in defense of cultures, of the political project of autonomies and the historical struggle for life?.
