Abstract

Philosophy, its teaching, and the contributions of both to education are the very subject of this book. Its strength lies in offering a comprehensive view of this threefold relationship across the broad spectrum of Latin America. In more than one passage, the book confronts the reader with the looming threat of the disappearance of philosophy itself, of the teaching of philosophy, a fate to which it has been subjected on more than one occasion, especially throughout this century. But, in another direction, the work shows ways to cope with the crisis, to emerge from it, to confront it. Certainly, there was a time when the goal of normalizing philosophy—a concept championed by Francisco Romero, who, incidentally, is one of the key figures in the discussion of the Argentine case in this book—seemed to be a common theme, a more or less shared project, for all the countries of the Latin American region. To a certain extent, the project was achieved; but, precisely upon reaching this point, at least relatively, many other phenomena jeopardized this aspiration.
