Abstract

Ignacio Ellacuría (1930-1989), Spanish by birth (Portugalete-Vizcaya), was a Jesuit priest who did his undergraduate studies in philosophy at the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador, where he met two priest-teachers who had a notable influence on his life. They were Aurelio Espinoza and Angel Martinez. He graduated in 1955. He did his doctorate in philosophy at the Complutense University of Madrid, where his professor and thesis director was Xavier Zubiri. His thought was influenced by the Madrid School, especially Ortega y Gasset, and later by personalist thought, but what marked his life was the situation of the Central American people, becoming one of the precursors of the "liberation theology".
