Abstract
Thyroid gland disorders are among the most commonissues encountered in medical practice at any level of care. The increasing detection of thyroid cancer, thyroidnodules, primary hypothyroidism, subclinicalhypothyroidism, and other conditions is largely due togreater accuracy and simplicity in evaluating thyroidfunction, as well as the widespread use of technologicaltools such as ultrasound across all levels of healthcare—tools that have incidentally revealed small thyroid nodules. These factors have enabled earlier diagnoses in primarycare, while advances in molecular biology in specializedcenters—combined with research data, high-qualityinformation, evidence-based medicine, and practicalguidelines—support healthcare professionals in makingappropriate clinical decisions. In recent years, especially following the pandemic, theconnection between thyroid health and mental health hasgained increased relevance. Psychological andneurocognitive conditions have been extensively exploredover the past decades. This is because the psychoemotional effects and psychosocial factors related tothyroid function may arise from a combination ofhormonal imbalances, their impact on mood, memory, andlearning, and changes in brain functioning associated withdepression, anxiety, irritability, and other conditions. Thyroid: Clinical Evidence and Psychosocial Effects isgrounded primarily in the guidelines of the EuropeanThyroid Association (ETA), the American ThyroidAssociation (ATA), and the thyroid guidelines of theEndocrinology Societies of Colombia, Spain, and othersbased on evidence-based medicine. It also incorporatesupdated literature available in PUBMED and otherscientific databases. Each chapter aims to systematize, based on the literature, the most relevant information forclinical, academic, and research settings. The book is organized into six main sections: levels ofevidence and recommendation grades, basic principles, common disorders, pregnancy, nutrition, and the psychoemotional effects related to thyroid conditions. Thisstructure supports the goal of promoting multidisciplinaryinvolvement in diagnosis and treatment, both in clinicalpractice and in mental healthcare. The latter focuses onassessing mood, cognition, and the individual’s overallfunctioning, with the purpose of expanding causal, evaluative, and therapeutic approaches that help strengthenand restore the quality of life of affected patients and theirclosest social environments. We hope that the knowledge and experiences shared hereprove useful in applying early, accurate, and timelydiagnosis and treatment to reduce and improve cardiopsycho-endocrine-metabolic comorbidities. With this goalin mind, we offer this text to healthcare professionals, dedicated to improving patient quality of life—the centralfocus of our study and work. We trust that this book willserve as a reference throughout different stages oftraining—education, residency, specialization—supporting clinical practice and fostering comprehensi.
