Abstract
In Shuar society initiation begins at birth whenis applied to the boy or girl, orally or anally, the floripondium juice(maikiua), tsentsemp (medicinal plant), tobacco (tsank), piripri (plantpurifier). In doing so the child receives the protection of the force thatrepresents each plant. Adolescents —men and women— initiate rational life by performing thefirst encounter with the Arutam. From this experience, they undertakethe path of finding his own identity, striving for selfcomprehension. It is a socially accepted pedagogy that generates a lifedriven by the rationality of the Arutam. Arutam's power isrepresented by the symbol of the waterfall (Tuna), where it manifestsTsunki's strength. The family and the community consider it necessary for the male adolescentyou must undertake your first trip to the waterfall. A wea leads the rite of idaand return of the symbolic waterfall. The young person must show the characteristicstypical of men: courage, decision and firmness. are strictly regulatedmeals and drinks. The ingestion of tobacco juice or floripondiostrengthens the spirit. The objective is to propitiate the meeting with Arutam insome point in the ritual. The teenager keeps the result a secretof his experience with the divinity.
