Abstract
The current university director has a key and leading role to ensure the contribution of the institution to the satisfaction of the various demands and social priorities. The significance of this role has been increasing due to the need for the university to carry out its daily activities with a high level of relevance, relevance and quality, in a society that is constantly changing and in an institutional context marked by increasing complexity. On this basis, this article assesses the possibilities and limitations of the competencies approach to facilitate the selection of university managers capable of carrying out the assigned role in the 21st century university.
