Abstract

This article explores the sociohistorical production of the territory in La Gobernación de los Quijos, Sumaco and La Canela, Upper Ecuadorian Amazon. From a historiographic perspective, we address the historical process and the dynamics that motivated various social actors to exercise their power from the sixteenth century to the mid-nineteenth century in the Upper Ecuadorian Amazon. The text suggests three periods of occupation and production of the territory: the first deals with the conquest of the Eastern (Amazonian) region, and problematizes the domination of the Spanish empire, with the support of the church and the imposition of the regime of the "reductions"; the second deals with the Spanish decline and the beginning of the religious missions in the Amazon; and the third approaches the Republican period and the socio-political production of the East.
