Abstract
In this research, the significance of temperaturesand times in heat treatments for carburizing AISI1020 steel was studied by heat treatments forcarburizing AISI 1020 steel using the design ofexperiments design of experiments. Anexperimental procedure was carried out in themachining of steel specimens for heat treatmentand surface hardness measurements wereperformed according to ASTM E18 standard. The heat treatments had three stages, carburizing, oil quenching and tempering, the heat treatmentshad three stages, carburizing, quenching in oil andtempering, to analyze the effect and significance of each factor in the increase of the surface hardness of the steel specimens the effect and significance of each factor in the increase of the steel surface hardness. Statistical software was used to generate a matrix of an orthogonal array for four levels, carburizing time and temperature, quenching temperatures, tempering temperatures, and hardening temperatures carburizing time and temperature, quenching and tempering temperatures, each factor with two different levels. different levels. The average surface hardness for the 16 experiments performed was 54.5 HRC, 54.5 HRC, 54.5 HRC, and 54.5 HRC, respectively was 54.5 HRC, reaching 61.47 HRC as the highest value in experiment 15 at carburizing temperature and time of 950 °C and 8 hours, and hardening and tempering temperatures of 770 and 150 °C, and tempering temperatures of 770 and 150 °C, respectively. Using an analysis of variance, it was determined that carburizing temperature was the factor of greatest significance on surface hardness, with a surface hardness, of 92.6 %, while the tempering and quenching temperatures did not show an appreciable did not present an appreciable significance.
