This research is focused on optimal transmission line switching (OTS) after the presence of N-1 contingencies in power systems; by means of OTS, the transmission stage is reconfigured after a failure, in this way; it seeks to reduce the loss or output demand of the system and to reduce the probability of a massive blackout. OTS is a very flexible method that allows solving several problems that arise in the electrical system, mainly in losses and operating costs. The equations that govern the OTS and an approximation of the method are proposed; the objective of the use of OTS is to maintain the minimum margins of operation of the electrical system (voltage, frequency, the balance of powers between the generation stage and the demand) in the face of an N-1 contingency and the reliability of the SEP will be evaluated both in prefailure and in post-failure by means of the reliability indices. OTS is a methodology that allows to restructure the SEP transmission stage, in order to maintain the appropriate levels to the system and reduce the losses that can occur.
