The article considers the testimonies left by the ecclesiastical agents of the Colony and the first republican century for the study of the Ecuadorian Quichua. This corpus allows us to trace some aspects of the history of this language, the internal linguistic changes and the linguistic ideology that accompanied its diffusion. In order to do so, it shows how the Andean linguistic policy was linked to the evangelizing project of the first colonial epoch. In function of this project, not only catechetical texts were written, but also grammars and vocabularies in the main languages of the Andes.
