Abstract

Communication Networks on Smart Grid, together with an appropriate management methodology, can provide options that seek to offer additional services to consumers of electricity supply, in this aspect this document refers to the importance of the consumer, i. e. the customer of the electricity supply, within the proposal of a Smart Grid. In view of this, there is a need to seek greater efficiency and reliability of the power grid in general and there are proposals to achieve this, either in the generation, transmission or distribution stage; but most of the initial projects are focused on the distribution stage, where different types of energy losses are generated. The initial projects are also implemented to reduce the percentage of blackouts, so work has been done on the automation of substations by placing the latest technology equipment such as IED's - Intelligent Electronic Devices for protection systems, which together with the use of communication protocols, are applied to perform agile and reliable cuts and reconnections of the power supply. The stage known as AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure), where different studies and researches have focused their interest either by governmental or private entities, leave in the background studies to improve or provide additional services to the final stage or customer.
