Abstract

To maintain the sustainability of food production, luxury products, raw material for energy and other uses, in a scenario of population growth and changes in climate cycles, it is necessary to generate, adapt and innovate technologies that improve the efficiency of water use in agriculture according to socio-territorial conditions. Considering that community irrigation systems in the Ecuadorian Andes are coupled and articulated systems between the community, nature and the infrastructure itself, the research line in management and sustainable management of water and soil of the Salesian Polytechnic University of Ecuador, presents the study material for the Continuing Education Program in management and sustainable management of community irrigation systems, consisting of six modules that can be increased according to the needs of the organizations that manage and manage irrigation. The program is aimed at irrigation technicians and promoters and includes modules such as "Basic office automation applied to irrigation management" and "Geographic information systems applied to irrigation management", technological tools that facilitate the generation and management of information that will allow timely decision making. We believe that the module "Organization for irrigation system management" is indispensable in the program because the essence of irrigation systems is their people and the way they work for a common purpose. We include a module of "Planning for irrigation management" that will help to establish actions, step by step, to have an efficient, fair and equitable irrigation system in the future. The "Irrigation Scheduling" module will guide in the understanding of the relationship between water, soil, plant, climate and community, synthesized in the establishment of water shifts. Finally, the module "Technification and innovation of irrigation systems" will allow us to make sure that the system is efficient in the use of water, from the social, environmental, technical, productive and economic points of view.
