Abstract

Latin American popular culture is the scenario in which diverse traditions, practices and beliefs are mixed, since colonial times. The religiosity of the Iberians and Romans, of the primitive Christians, the Visigoths and the Muslims of the conquerors, will meet with the religiosity of the Amerindian groups. This encounter, called syncretism, between Hispanics and Amerindians, will create a particular universe, rich in magic and nuances, where divinities and beliefs of all disparate. In this world of divinities arises the figure of San Gonzalo, a popular image spread throughout the country, which has an enormous symbolic load. San Gonzalo transits between good and evil. Around his adoration there is a subway world of witches and wizards, healers, evil spells, sorcerers, revenge, potions for love, for hate, to give life and even to kill. It is enough that the victim's name is written in the book of Camana (witch) to be condemned to betrayal, illness and even death.
