Abstract

The Salesian project Chicos de la Calle is one of the leading institutions in educational work serving one of the most vulnerable sectors of our country, it has a vast and rich experience during these 35 years where Salesians and lay people have made a path in this work to address a very complex problem worldwide, in this journey has been building a model of Salesian care to affect the lives of children, adolescents, young people and their families who participate in the educational instances of San Lorenzo, Esmeraldas, Quito, Santo Domingo, Ambato, Guayaquil and Cuenca; The Salesian Project has gone through various moments in these years of existence, it has gone from being an institution driven only by good will and assistance to protect the weakest, which perhaps at that time was a way of doing good in the late seventies and eighties, to become an integral educational proposal to organize and structure itself always in terms of children and their priorities of care. There are several characteristics that now define it as a valid proposal to carry out interventions with these population groups and to offer alternatives of life that favor the citizen protagonism of hundreds and thousands of participants in the diverse educational programs that it carries out; nevertheless, there are several essential characteristics that are proper of the project and that have their praxis from the times in which Don Bosco began his work taking care of the most dispossessed young people in his native Italy. From the various care centres and programmes we can see the daily implementation of preventive intervention both in the social field and in the field of education that the Salesian project is now carrying out for the most vulnerable sectors.
