Abstract
The question of the nature, scope and functions of the market in the socialist economy has been a historical subject of scientific and political debate. Important economists have contributed investigative work in this line, which has formed one of the most interesting theoretical bodies of heterodox economic theory. The objective of this article was to analyze the arguments put forward by the British economist and sociologist Diane Elson in relation to the nature of the market, as well as her proposal for a series of institutions for the effective organization of a socialist economy. Documentary review and analysis were basically used, as well as the historical-logical method, and the analysis and synthesis procedures. The review was made taking as an analytical reference the process of economic updating that Cuba is carrying out, where the role of the market and planning is extremely important, and where it is urgent that scientific debate accompany economic policy decisions.
