Abstract
Diseases of the respiratory system are undoubtedlyamong those with the highest morbidity at the national leveland worldwide. Every year huge amounts of money are spent on pharmaceuticals. such as: antitussives, expectorants, antivirals, antibiotics, anti-inflammatoriesand antipyretics; to mitigate diseases and symptoms derivedrespiratory diseases widely spread among the population. The various peoples and nationalities that inhabit Ecuador employa large number of medicinal plants both native and introducedas part of alternative treatments in respiratory diseases. TheThis review analyzes those species used in a traditional way,and verifies in those of greater use, its scientific support evaluating the informationchemical and biological activity that can be found in thescientific literature, thus contributing to increase the knowledgeof the natural products that are used in our country.
