Abstract

The present investigation establishes an alternative to improve the energy efficiency of artisanal kilns used for the firing of tiles and bricks, which pre-sent an efficiency of approximately 9.6% and its consequent high environ-mental pollution; in addition, they cause production losses between 15 and 20%. The current conditions of the artisanal kiln and the production process were considered to develop a simulation model using specialized software in which the efficiency was determined, as well as the most critical areas with high temperature gradients, with this model it was possible to verify that the cooking chamber reaches a temperature of 800 ºC, maintaining a variation of ± 5 ºC in the different critical areas when using a hemispherical lid with a combustion gas extraction system.
