Abstract
Due to the constant growth of the industrial sector and the use of high capacity electric motors, there was a need to implement protection setting criteria for motors coupled to medium voltage networks. The article presents the implementation of three overcurrent IEDs, one for distance and one for motor protection in an electrical system that starts from a subtransmission line with a real data network equivalent. The electrical system and the settings of the protections were simulated in the PowerFactory software. To validate the proposed settings and injection of fault voltages and currents in the IEDs, the Omicron CMC356 test equipment is used. The response times between the simulation and the physical response of the IED vary by ± 10 ms, which validates the proposed methodology. Setting and coordination criteria that can be implemented in sub-transmission, distribution, and motor protection electrical networks are presented and validated.
