Abstract
During 2016, in conjunction with the Literacy Center of the Salesian Polytechnic University and the Salesian special training program (PACES), workshops were held in order to include reading comprehension to a group of children and adolescents in situations of vulnerability. The methodology used in this research focused on presenting and sharing children’s literary production of several Ecuadorian writers. The daily practice with the children and adolescents of the Paces program was observed and analyzed during the workshop, corroborating that reading practices are indispensable, and questions arise such as: What are the difficulties? What reading comprehension strategies could be applied to the vulnerable group? From this strategy it was found that motivating reading in the recipients overcomes the lack of oral expression skills; in addition, it was identified that in the development of the readings they understood and interpreted widely the contents of the texts. Among these activities were students from the Salesian Polytechnic University in their roles of tutors and collaborators of the Center of Academic Literacy (CLEA), who planned and executed this project using materials that were self-managed with LNS editorial and correspond to literature oriented by levels of knowledge and aimed at developing their reading skills. In this way, it is clear that from reading motivation, participants can find motivations related to their basic literacy skills and contribute to their process of reinsertion and improvement of life quality.
