Abstract

Food and nutrition are the evident basis of human well-being, and are fundamental rights of humanity and children, as ratified by Human Rights (1948), the World Food Summit (1996) and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989). In Ecuador, programs such as the Intersectoral Plan for Food and Nutrition (PIANE) 2018-2025, of the Ministry of Health, seeks to ensure these rights at the country level. However, and despite the intentions on paper, we are far from adequate nutrition both nationally and globally. The issue of adequate nutrition is complex. On the one hand, it is necessary to talk about malnutrition, a problem present in the most vulnerable sectors, affected by poverty, lack of education and other associated socioeconomic conflicts such as wars, displacements, natural disasters and the scarce capacity of the State to adequately distribute resources, health and education (Barona, 2011). On the other hand, it is necessary to mention malnutrition, which is often not exclusive to malnutrition, and which is born of inadequate eating habits, which in recent years have unfailingly been the cause of associated chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and obesity, to name a few (Jara Porras et al., 2018). This problematic is not only linked to what people "choose" to eat, but to an entire food and pharmaceutical industry that is sustained by these bad habits; of which the main victims are children and young people (PIANE, 2018).
