Abstract
This research aims to improve the power factor in a distribution electrical power system through the use of particle swarm optimization in order to find the optimal bus bar location for a distributed static synchronous compensator D-STATCOM by considering as a restriction not modified any other electrical parameter in the system. As a case study the IEEE 34 bus bar system is analysed in which first a base analysis of all power factors in each area of the system is performed, then the D-STATCOM is connected in every single bus bar to analyze all possible scenarios of compensation which will be the raw data to use and analyze with the optimization function. Finally, particle swarm optimization is implemented and the optimal global location for the location of the distributed static synchronous compensator is determined.
