Abstract
Herbivorous animals are biological machines that transform forage into meat, milk or wool. The health of the animals and, therefore, the quality of their products depend on the quality of the forage. In this work the reader will find the most varied information on the production factors of the main pastures and forages cultivated in the country in both cold and tropical climates, the planting and management of pastures, fertilization, recovery and improvement of paddocks, livestock management in grazing systems, the nutritional value of pastures, deficiency diseases and metabolic diseases of grazing livestock, forage production planning, and forage conservation methods. In addition to other topics related to pastures, such as seed production, establishment and management of pastures. In Ecuador, publications on pasture and forage production are scarce; therefore, the authors seek to fill the existing gap at the level of academia, professionals and livestock producers. The authors' experience in teaching, scientific research, participation in congresses and professional practice in agronomy, agriculture and veterinary medicine has allowed them to write this work in simple and understandable terms for all types of public.
