Research output: Contribution to journalArticle

Abstract

Introduction: Odontogenic infections originate in tissues such as: alveolar bone, teeth, gums, periodontal ligaments and surrounding connective tissue. Objective: To study the involvement of odontogenic infections in the development of Bacterial Endocarditis. Metho-dology: A narrative review was applied. Information collection was applied to the databa-ses: PubMed, Web of Science, Medline, Google Scholar and Scopus and Elsevier; duringDecember 2023 and March 2024. 38 scientific works published in the last three decades were included. Results: The dissemination of bacteria, hematogenously, from odontogenic infections, can colonize the endocardium and form vegetations; predominating gram posi-tives such as: Staphylococcus, Streptococcus and Enterococcus. Antimicrobial prophylaxis must be followed prior to dental procedures in at-risk subjects. Conclusions: Bacterial Endocarditis constitutes a serious complication of odontogenic infections, which warrants multidisciplinary management.
