Abstract
It is common that the feeding of breeding animals in a dairy herd is underestimated and leads to nutritional deficiencies that are reflected in low weight gains, animals without adequate weight at first service (16-18 months of age) and low milk production when they reach their productive stage. The objective of this research was to identify the nutritional quality of the main raw materials used in the feeding of dairy cattle in the Cayambe canton. The raw materials were evaluated in terms of chemical composition, consumption parameters and the relationship between quality, consumption, weight gain and cost. This information can contribute to management decisions and to the fulfillment of specific nutritional or productive objectives. The breeding of replacement animals in livestock production systems is of great importance since the continuity and improvement of the herd depends on them.
