Numerical simulation of a turbulent flow through a butterfly valve is a useful technique for investigating the physical phenomena of the flow field. A two-dimensional numerical analysis of a turbulent flow of liquid water in a butterfly valve was performed using Ansys FLUENT, which solves difference equations. We investigated the flow characteristics through the valve at different percentages of valve disc opening with a uniform inlet velocity. A mesh independence based on velocity was performed in order to correctly choose the type of mesh that was used throughout the analysis. This simulation provides the contours of velocity and kinetic energy of turbulence especially in the section where the butterfly valve is located. The results of the two-dimensional analysis can be useful for valve design.
