Abstract

This research proposes, from the perspective of media competences and specifically from the Ideology and Values dimension of Ferrés & Piscitelli (2012), the importance of media education in the formation of critical and political thinking, as an a priori measure to create a citizen awareness that allows understanding the underlying contents of the ideological messages of the media. To this end, we begin by explaining various discursive strategies used by populist regimes for social control, such as demonization and polarization, discursive strategies of populism that are later contrasted with the areas of analysis of the dimension explained above. It is concluded that there is a direct link between media education and citizen protection against demonization and social polarization, these competencies being delimited in six areas of analysis of the ideology and values dimension.
