Abstract
Ecuador is considered one of the most biodiverse countries withextensive ethnobotanical knowledge, there are few studies and initiativesto encourage the mass production of medicinal plants and phytomedicines. The therapeutic potential of some species from the point of viewethnobotanical has already been cataloged by some authors, species are identifiedused within ancestral knowledge are generally sold in herbal shopsof markets, around 273 species of these 178 are native, 83 introducedand 12 endemic; the research performs an analysis of 1427 productsthat are sold in Ecuador registered in the National Agencyof Regulation Control and Sanitary Surveillance, the analysis of the componentsof the registered formulas result in the use of the species used in these products, 65 species are identified within which only 13correspond to those used in local markets, 128 industries are relatedwith the production, commercialization and/or distribution of the 1426products, of these 46% is part of the national industry, the objective of thisresearch work is to identify the potential market for medicinal plantsrelated to our ancestral knowledge, through an analysisbibliographic documentary information which will guide futurefuture research demonstrating biological activities validationscientific knowledge necessary to develop a phytomedicine.
