Abstract
Motivation is an internal state that pushes people to perform goal-directed actions, in such a way that this motivation influences both the type of strategy used to carry out the action, as well as the time and perseverance invested in achieving it. In intrinsic achievement-oriented motivation, satisfaction occurs when products are generated or when one's own limits are exceeded. In the extrinsic motivation of introjected regulation, the behaviors are executed to improve self-esteem or to avoid the anxiety and guilt that can arise from not taking them outside. Amotivation is when a subject acts without the intention of achieving a result, because he does not find any relationship between his actions and the consequences of his actions. Determining intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation, and amotivation predicts the academic performance of university students. A quantitative research was carried out with a non-experimental, cross-sectional and correlational design, using non-probabilistic samples for convenience. A total of 1555 Ecuadorian university students (n = 606 women) participated in the study with the aim of testing the model by linear regression analysis. The Academic Motivation Scale (EMA) was applied, composed of 27 items, which measures the dimensions of extrinsic motivation, intrinsic motivation and amotivation. Academic performance was assessed through the grades obtained by students in the academic period. The results demonstrated that intrinsic achievement-oriented motivation positively predicts (B = 0.143), while extrinsic motivation of introjected regulation and amotivation negatively predicts academic performance (B = 0.102). The extrinsic motivation of introjected regulation and amotivation negatively predict academic performance. Likewise, the data from the analysis reflect that intrinsic achievement-oriented motivation positively predicts academic performance.
