Abstract
A powerful social critique that puts a face and drama to a highly relevant sociopolitical phenomenon today. It serves as a tool for raising awareness of the exploitation and abuse present along the migration route. The discussion about the human cost and vulnerability of irregular Latin American migrants to the U. S. focuses on economic motivations—"money is essential for their families"—and the so-called "American Dream," which often ends up becoming a nightmare. It exposes the exploitation, mistreatment, and humiliation to which migrants are subjected, with special emphasis on the vulnerability of women to trafficking networks and sexual violence. It also addresses the context of machismo that conditions and pressures female migration. The work starkly illustrates the systematic human rights violations and the double discrimination that women face during their migration journey.
