Abstract

In 2020, GEANT the advanced network for Europe integrates research and education networks for 43 countries. In time, the GEANT backbone has been evolving till today, offering from 10 Gbps till 300 Gbps links and core routers showing high-performance. Our interest is to study this kind of backbone networks to offer advice about future updates to Internet Service Provider companies. Due to the complexity of backbone equipment, we used GNS3 emulator to get an approach for connectivity and management assessment. Results show us capabilities and limitations when approaching this kind of real backbone infrastructure using IPv6 protocols for routing and management such as OSPFv3 and SNMPv3. This work is particularly important due to there is not too much information published from ISP companies neither the GEANT project.
