Abstract

The presence of the Salesian Congregation in Ecuador began in the year 1888, going through much of the re-publican life of this country. During the presidency of José María PlácidoCaamaño, the pertinent steps are taken for the arrival of the first Salesian expedition. In 1885, Dr. Carlos Rodolfo Tobar, being undersecretary of the Ministry of Public Instruction, prepared a report about Juan Bosco Occhiena and the works of this young Congregation. Tobar supported before the Na-tional Congress the importance of the coming of the Salesians to the country: “... from the above, you will know HH. Senators and Deputies, how fruitful it will be for the entire Republic, both for the inhabitants of the cities, and for the inhabitants ofthe jungle, the coming to our country of some Salesian Religious”.The purpose of the government was to entrust this Con-gregation with the work with the indigenous people of the jungle in the territory of the Shuar, known at that time as jíbaros. The State had failed to effectively incorporate this human group into the national context.
