Abstract

The first two volumes of THE SALESIANS AND THE AMAZON give the floor exclusively to the missionaries, so that they relate their long voyages of exploration, their first contacts with the Shuar, their observations on the customs and the language of a people that they were getting to know little by little. The Shuar and the central-meridional region of the Ecuadorian east have been known in the world in great part through the writings of the missionaries. Today it is considered that the image that these relations project is not the most objective and has not always favored the described people. It is possible, but we cannot forget that today we judge differently because there is a century of development of ethnographic, anthropological and social sciences in general: we cannot expect from the XIX century the criteria we have reached in 1993. For this reason, volume III aims to present a balance of the Salesian activity in the main fields of its realization. Many of these reflections have appeared in previous years in publications of different kinds and, if they are included here, it is to offer a global vision that allows a global judgment.
