Abstract

Exactly 19 years ago I was invited by Fr. Juan Bottasso to participate as an observer in a meeting of the Salesian authorities of Ecuador, which took place in San Patricio (Quito), and where they were discussing the relevance or not of creating a university. Those in favor argued that: a) there was a growing demand from young people from middle and modest sectors for a higher education that would guarantee them professionalization and academic training; b) university education had become an increasingly widespread need throughout the world, precisely when secondary education was already relatively satisfied.
