Abstract

Barrio Nigeria is one of the sectors that make up the city of Guayaquil, is located in the cooperative Independencia I-II of Isla Trinitaria. This sector is made up of Afro-Ecuadorians who, for the most part, are the result of the phenomenon of migration from the province of Esmeraldas. The characteristics of the neighborhood are poverty and unemployment, generated by different factors that have influenced the existence of the Afro people. In the present work, it will be possible to deepen the complex features that have emerged in the respective field research, based on observation and interviews that yield interesting data, in which it is evident that migration, racism and other factors are the result of the so-called paradigm of conquest, marked by the process of westernization and globalization. In this sense, the Afro-Ecuadorians who opted for migration, at the time were self-convinced that living off the bounties of the land and the sea was living in poverty, and that migrating from their place of origin would help them to get out of poverty. In the case of Barrio Nigeria, migration contributed to the strengthening of the circles of poverty in the city of Guayaquil, given that since its beginnings in the nineties, until a few years ago, a large number of people lived in unfavorable circumstances in terms of quality of life and living conditions.
