Abstract
This chapter describes the social, political, histori-cal, and pedagogical context in which the Master's Program in Intercultural Bilingual Education (MEIB), offered at the Salesian Polytechnic Uni-versity (UPS) of Ecuador, was created and is being developed. It reviews the progress and limitations of the various intercultural bilingual education pro-jects and programs that have been implemented or are currently underway at the higher education level. The objective is to train professionals who are proficient in both ancestral sciences and those of other world cultures and who use both their native language and Spanish as a second language in intercultural bilingual education processes. For this reason, one of the requirements for admission to this master's program is proficiency in an indig-enous language, both orally and in writing.
