Abstract

The Big Five (BAC) model is a factor model of individual positive traits based on an inductive psycholexical approach and comprising the human positive factors or traits called the high factors: erudition, peace, joviality, honesty, and tenacity. These factors are different from the factors of the Big Five model of normal personality (CGM), despite being related to them. Honesty is the positive moral trait, expressed in positive characteristics such as: loyal, trustworthy, with values, transparent and truthful. To identify whether the honesty of the Five High Model (BAC) is a predictor of the academic performance of university students. A quantitative methodology was used with a non-experimental, cross-sectional and correlational design, using non-probabilistic samples for convenience. A total of 1,555 Ecuadorian university students (n = 606 women) participated in the study with the aim of testing the model using linear regression analysis. The Inventory of the Five Stops (ICA-E), composed of 23 items, was applied, specifically using the Honesty factor. To measure academic performance, the grades of the academic period of each student were recorded. The results indicated that the Honesty factor of the High Five Inventory (ICA-E) predicts academic performance (B = - 0.080, p > 0.01), outperforming the usual psychological predictors. High honesty is a negative predictor of academic performance, suggesting that students with higher levels of honesty tend to avoid dishonest behaviors, such as cheating or plagiarism, that could artificially improve their grades. This behavior, while ethically valuable, could limit their ability to perform better academically in contexts where the pressure to get high grades is high.
